Northbourne Avenue Corridor

Northbourne Housing Precinct

Dickson Flats – Block 40 and 41 Section 6 Dickson

The Northbourne Avenue Corridor is the gateway to the Nation’s Capital.  It is the first experience interstate visitors have of Canberra when arriving from Sydney or Melbourne.  However, this corridor is underutilised, tired and is lined with outdated public housing stock that no longer suits the needs of contemporary public housing tenants.

The ACT Government is committed to making the corridor a gateway of which we can all be proud – one that signals that we are an inclusive community; a community that provides a range of suitable housing options for all its members. A gateway that says we are a confident, bold and ready city.

The Corridor has been identified as an area for significant growth and will involve redevelopment of Government-owned residential and non-residential properties.  The redevelopment will create an environment that promotes a vibrant mix of residences, businesses and retail space and an invigorated gateway to Canberra.

As part of the Asset Recycling Initiative, the ACT Government will be redeveloping its ageing public housing stock – particularly the multi-unit properties along Northbourne Avenue – to invest in the Capital Metro project, to provide new public housing that meets the needs of contemporary public housing tenants, and to spearhead the urban renewal of the gateway to the National Capital.

As part of the first stage of this redevelopment, a Development Application (DA201425880) was submitted to demolish the Dickson Flats (Blocks 40 and 41 Section 6 Dickson).

DA201425880 was approved with conditions on 16 March 2015.  The Notice of Decision requires the retention of the northernmost tower and two regulated trees on the site, but approved the demolition of the remaining structures, trees, landscaping and paving.

It is the Land Development Agency’s (LDA) intent to tender for the demolition works ahead of releasing this block to market.
